Do i really need a dental crown?

Veritas Dental Care Extractions

Although there are many situations when a dental crown can help to extend the lifespan of a tooth, there are certain times when other options may be appropriate before undergoing such a procedure. As this procedure can be quite common, it is important to understand a few key concepts. At Veritas Dental Care, Dr. Sam Sherif is the leading cosmetic dentist and very happy to address this issue. Let us take a look at some of the main factors to keep in mind when contemplating such a procedure.

Where is the Crown Needed?

Unlike a fractured bone, a cracked tooth will not heal. However, these cracks should never be mistaken for what are known as ‘craze’ lines. These are lines which are common in adult teeth. With these lines, bleaching can help to reduce their visibility.

Other Options?

There are many cases when a filling may be another choice. However, it is important to note that a filling is generally only a temporary fix. Additionally, larger fillings may cause the tooth to crack.

A Waiting Game?

There can be several results should one wait for the crown. Nothing could happen and the tooth could remain fine. Or, the tooth may only chip; a simple repair would be needed. Unfortunately, there are times when a more invasive procedure such as a root canal may eventually be warranted. Should the tooth split, an entire extraction could be needed. Dr. Sam Sherif will happy to discuss all of these situations with you.

Root Canal?

In most instances, the crown procedure will not need to be accompanied by a root canal. If there is no infection, the patient is usually fine.

The Presence of a Larger Filling

Those patients with significantly large fillings may opt for an elective crown, for the tooth is placed under additional stress and risks a fracture over time. However, this is entirely up to the patient. A cosmetic dentist should still be consulted, for he or she will be able to determine the likelihood of a break occurring in the future.
