Dental implants
Missing a tooth can be embarrassing for many people, so missing multiple teeth can be life-changing, but there is a solution, dental implants.
A dental implant is, quite simply, a replacement for the root that would normally hold a tooth in the gum. A hole is drilled into the jaw bone and the implant is secured firmly inside this; the replacement tooth is then screwed on to the implant. Replacing more than one tooth in this manner is commonly referred to as Multiple Teeth Replacement and is the best way to replace teeth, ensuring they last a long time, but it can be expensive and time consuming.
There is a less intrusive alternative and that is to have an implant bridge fitted. If you have teeth missing in a particular section, then your dentist may recommend an implant bridge. If they don’t, then ask them if your situation would be suited to having one. In order to fit an implant bridge the dentist will usually drill two holes, at appropriate intervals, into the jaw bone; the bridge will be secured in place on to these implants. The bridge itself will contain the replacement teeth and will look just like natural teeth. However, this procedure can only be carried out if all of the missing teeth are from the same area of the mouth. If the teeth that are missing are in different sections of the gum, then they will need to be replaced individually as described above.
Whichever method is used to replace your teeth, it is important to understand that you will be having an operation to fit the implants, which will require anaesthetic. There are a range of options regarding which anaesthetic to use and it will be largely dependent on how comfortable you are with being conscious during the procedure. The best course of action regarding this will be discussed with you.
Once your new teeth have been fitted and you have healed, you will then need to care for them like you would your natural teeth to ensure that they last as long as possible. This will also include making sure that you attend any follow-up appointments and take heed of advice given to you by your dentist. If you do this, then the chances are that your new smile will last you a very long time.
Most people are eligible to have an implant fitted, but it is always advisable to have a consultation to discuss the variety of options available to you before committing.
